Del Ray will be celebrating National Night Out this evening August 7, from 5:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M!

City officials have partnered with Alexandria Police to celebrate the 29th Annual National Night Out.  The special celebration is part of a nationwide crime and drug prevention effort sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).

The Del Ray Citizens Association will be celebrating at 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Vernon Rec. Center’s playing fields.

Join your neighbors at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center Field on Tuesday, August 7th to Celebrate Del Ray’s National Night Out. Many local businesses have pitched in to help make this a fun and safe event. There will be hotdogs, veggie burgers, chips, cookies, lemonade and water provided! There will be fun games for kids and adults with “cool” prizes! Music performance by 50 Man Machine! So come on out, claim your hay bale and have fun! National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity for our community to meet your local police, fire fighters and emergency respondrers!

There will be celebrations throughout Alexandria for National Night Out. To heighten awareness of crime prevention, residents in more than 30 Alexandria neighborhoods will turn on their porch lights, host neighborhood cook-outs and sponsor block parties in support of National Night Out.  Mayor William D. Euille, City Manager Rashad M. Young, members of City Council and Chief of Police Earl L. Cook will reaffirm the City’s commitment to fighting crime by visiting residents throughout the City. McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Bus, Armored Motor Carrier and the Crime Scene Mobile Lab will tour neighborhoods and offer special demonstrations.

National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to:
• Heighten crime prevention awareness;
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and law enforcement-community partnerships;
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

“National Night Out is an opportunity for the police department to strengthen our relationship with the community and thank the residents for their vigilance and their dedication to keeping Alexandria a safe place to live, work and visit,” says Chief Cook.

Traveling with kids for the holidays? Or welcoming a new bundle of joy before the end of the year?

The Fairfax Co. Sheriff’s Office will help make this holiday season safer for your children. I know it’s a bit of a hike but it’s well worth it for this exceptional service that is no longer provided by the City of Alexandria.

Specially trained and certified sheriff’s deputies will help parents and caregivers ensure that a child fits securely in the safety seat and that the safety seat fits securely in the vehicle seat.

Bring your vehicle and safety seat(s). Bring your child, too…if he or she is available!

One of Old Towns biggest holiday traditions is happening as I type; The 41st Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend! The taste of Scotland will be tonight and boy am I looking forward to this parents night out with my husband!  The heather and greens sale & the Christmas marketplace will be going on today until 5 p.m. and then the heather and greens sale will pick back up tomorrow from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Masonic Temple.

The big draw for the kiddos (if you missed your chance to score tickets for ‘Deck the Halls with Santa’ ) will be the big parade starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning.  Over 100 Scottish Clans, pipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, re-enactment groups, Scottie dog groups, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus will march through the streets of Old Town. The parade route begins at the corner of Wilkes and South Saint Asaph Streets in Old Town and ends at King and Royal Streets. Following the parade a massed band concert takes place at King and Royal Streets in front of City Hall at Market Square at 1 p.m.

The Campagna Center will have an open house from 12-5 p.m. also on Saturday where they will be featuring a model train display by the Potomac Module Crew.   The Campagna Center, an organization that provides vital services for Alexandria’s children and families, puts on the Walk Weekend as their largest fundraising activity.
