Every year my Del Ray family makes a (short) trek out into Fairfax County for a Christmas tradition. No, we don’t head out of the city in search of the perfect Christmas tree. We head out to see the Collingwood Lights!
Drive south down the GW Parkway and a few miles before you reach Mount Vernon, you’ll find one of the most amazing Christmas light displays that you’ll ever see donning someone’s front yard. This animated light show is set to music that you can tune in to on your car’s radio. Get your car in line and get ready to see the house, trees and even reindeer dance along to holiday hits from Elvis, Mariah Carey, the Beach Boys and more.
Load the kids up and head to 1601 Collingwood Rd., Alexandria because if your kids are like…well pretty much every kid that I know…then they are gonna love these lights! Take a look at a video of the light show here if you’d like a preview: http://youtu.be/b8q8KRChM5c
Can’t get enough Christmas lights? Our Kids has a list of great light displays around the metro area including this one.

Traveling with kids for the holidays? Or welcoming a new bundle of joy before the end of the year?
The Fairfax Co. Sheriff’s Office will help make this holiday season safer for your children. I know it’s a bit of a hike but it’s well worth it for this exceptional service that is no longer provided by the City of Alexandria.
Specially trained and certified sheriff’s deputies will help parents and caregivers ensure that a child fits securely in the safety seat and that the safety seat fits securely in the vehicle seat.
Bring your vehicle and safety seat(s). Bring your child, too…if he or she is available!

One of Old Towns biggest holiday traditions is happening as I type; The 41st Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend! The taste of Scotland will be tonight and boy am I looking forward to this parents night out with my husband! The heather and greens sale & the Christmas marketplace will be going on today until 5 p.m. and then the heather and greens sale will pick back up tomorrow from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Masonic Temple.
The big draw for the kiddos (if you missed your chance to score tickets for ‘Deck the Halls with Santa’ ) will be the big parade starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. Over 100 Scottish Clans, pipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, re-enactment groups, Scottie dog groups, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus will march through the streets of Old Town. The parade route begins at the corner of Wilkes and South Saint Asaph Streets in Old Town and ends at King and Royal Streets. Following the parade a massed band concert takes place at King and Royal Streets in front of City Hall at Market Square at 1 p.m.
The Campagna Center will have an open house from 12-5 p.m. also on Saturday where they will be featuring a model train display by the Potomac Module Crew. The Campagna Center, an organization that provides vital services for Alexandria’s children and families, puts on the Walk Weekend as their largest fundraising activity.
Santa arrives in Del Ray this coming Friday, Dec. 2nd. at the annual Del Ray Holiday Tree Lighting. The kids can visit with Santa, there will be thousands of Luminaries along the Avenue and special “Holiday Spirits” that will be offered by many of the retail businesses in Del Ray. The Tree Lighting and visit with Santa will take place at 6 pm, at the lot at Mt. Vernon and E. Oxford Avenues. We will also sing holiday favorites led by our own Kate Moran Band and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate and cookies. After Santa lights the tree he will hand out candy canes and a photographer will be available to take photos of your children with Santa which can be e-mailed to you. Also look for a special appearance by the Del Ray Carolers.
