If you’re like me and my family, you’re probably under-utilizing the city’s recreation centers. I thought it was worthwhile to check out a few of the centers closest to us in Del Ray. My first stop was at Charles Houston Recreation Center, so here is my “review” on the city’s newest recreation center.

Charles Houston Recreation Center

901 Wythe St.
Alexandria, VA 22314
703.746.5552

Hours:
Mon-Fri 9 am to 9 pm
Teens only 9 -11 pm

Sat 9 am to 6 pm
Teens only 6 – 11 pm

Sun 1 to 5 pm

Fitness center
The fitness center and weight room are open when the center is open. Daily Visit is $5 for residents or $10 for non- residents. 3, 6 and 12 month passes are available for discounted rates. Children under the age of 15 are not allowed in the fitness center. 15 -17 must be accompanied by a paying adult and show photo school ID. Seniors 55+ get and additional discount.

Gym

The gym is always a big hit with my oldest child and my husband. The gym is not available to rent but is frequently usually open for free play. Be sure to call ahead to check on the daily schedule though.

Pool

The pool features zero entry slopes to a mere 3′, a perfect set up for little ones. The pool offers daily rates and season passes that are very affordable. Parents are welcome to accompany their children though. There are two short lap lanes at 4′ depth. There are several bubbler and spray fountains for little ones to play in along with a “waterfall”

There are several small clean bathrooms at the pool area that are family friendly. There are no concessions available and food and drinks are not allowed in the pool area, however they encourage you to step outside of the fenced-in pool area to enjoy snacks and lunch in the grass.

The pool usually doesn’t have a crowd so it’s a perfect spot to take little ones.

Soft Play Room

The soft play room is a mini version of the soft play room we all love at Chinquapin Rec. Center. This soft play room is perfect for the smaller ones that may get run over by the older kids at Chinquapin. There’s wall to wall mats with colorful climbing structures limited in height to one foot. A small ball pit is in the room along with games, toys and wee ones seats.

Soft Play is open for ages 0-5 with adult.  This unstructured drop–in playgroup encourages motor skill development on three-dimensional mats. An adult must accompany each child/family. Socks are required for all. Please call ahead for availability as there is a max of 16. Admission Fee: $5 Residents/$10 Non Residents (Chaperones are free)

Mon-Fri 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sat 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sun 1 p.m. to 5 pm

This room can be rented for birthday parties! This is the space I’d dreamed of for my daughter’s first birthday.

Game Room

The game room facility offers a pool table, ping pong table, Foosball and air hockey table, all for free use by city residents. This seems like a perfect hang out for rainy days and older, competitive kids.

Playground
The outdoor playground features a soft surface and is completely enclosed. The only entry to this playground is through a door from the Rec. Center. The play system has a slide, climbing structures and monkey bars.

Programs
A number of programs are offered at the facility through the Alexandria Recreation Department. You can view the Program Guide to see all the classes and times. Classes for children include swimming, Little Gymmies, Abrakadoodle Doodlers, Music Together, Tiny Dancers, youth chess, gymnastics and mom & me yoga.

The facility offers after care for school age children. The aftercare program uses the facility on Mon. – Fri. from 2:30 pm – 6 pm. (Please note that during these hours, after care children will be present throughout the  center, in other areas mentioned above.)

The Advisory Board has created this helpful website that covers general information, fees, programs and activities.

Be sure to check out this Alexandria gem!

I have wonderful memories of visiting my local library growing up and all the wonderful books that I discovered and all the magical places and people I met in those books. We all know that Alexandria city’s libraries have kids books, parenting books and even a fantastic selection of kids videos but did you know about all the amazing events and story times that the Alexandria city library‘s host every day? To give you an idea of how many fantastic programs the city’s four library branches host each day, I’m including a list of all the free events for children that will be held through the end of January. Pick out your favorite events and have tons of FREE fun!Kids Events & Story TimesKids Events & Story Times2013-06-25 16.17.42

What better day than to start a new blog series of ‘My Favorite Things’ in our neighborhood than Christmas Eve? These things don’t have to be big but they’re the things that make our community such a special place to be raising our kids!

LETTERS TO SANTA AT PURPLE GOOSE

Years ago Purple Goose started the tradition of being a drop off point for letters to Santa. Their mailbox disappeared last year but they continued the tradition this year. Santa replies to each letter that is dropped off!

Small-Business-Saturday-Christmas-ShoppingThere’s been talk of the Obama family getting out to do some holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday in the neighborhood. There are lots of places on the Avenue to scoop up great items for Sasha & Malia who are quickly growing before our eyes from adorable kids into beautiful young women! But what about the younger kids and babies on the Obama’s Christmas list? Well no need to fret POTUS! We’ve got you covered!

Del Ray VarietyDel Ray Variety will be celebrating Small Biz Saturday with some special treats for their customers. Purple Goose2Purple Goose1  Purple Goose3
At The Purple Goose they will be offering all clothes on Sat. for 30% off! Purple Goose is an amazingly unique children’s boutique with the best fashions, accessories and toys for newborns through age 14.

Bellies & BabiesObama will probably sigh in agreement that alas his girls have outgrown Bellies and Babies Consignment Boutique but perhaps this is the perfect spot for friends and family members with newborns. This fantastic upscale consignment boutique also carries new popular retail baby items such as Ergo Baby Carriers, Alden & Anais Swaddlers and hand-made baby gifts. There’s always a terrific selection of consignment clothing for kids from newborn to around age five or six.

kiskadee2POTUS won’t want to miss Kiskadee for a great gift for Michelle. Their selection of boutique designer women’s clothing is amazing. But there are also some adorable gift items for kids that can be found upstairs! Kiskadee has been my neighborhood go to for the best fashions and accessories.

Show of Hands2Show of Hands3Show of Hands1
My all time favorite gift buying spot in Del Ray is Show of Hands. Show of Hands showcases a diversity of local artists by providing them with a venue to showcase and sell their unique, handcrafted artwork. There’s something for everyone on your list including your Del Ray Baby! They will have their seasonal promotion “Spend $100 and get $10” cards. For every $100 spent in the shop they will give you a $10 gift certificate. The cards are available until December 31, but the great thing is the $10 gift certificates never expire.

Artfully ChocolateNot sure what to give? Chocolate is always the answer! My babies have loved picking up sweet treats from Artfully Chocolate as long as they can remember! Artfully Chocolate is the area’s first cocoa bar with a vibrant and colorful art gallery. They feature artisinal chocolates and sweet treats that everyone will savor.
